Scientists have named 93,000 species, but it is estimated that an additional 73,000 remain unnamed. The article references a study in North Carolina in which scientists took soil samples at a depth of five inches and estimate that there are 124 million animals per acre. A similar study in Pennsylvania returned a shocking estimate of 425 million animals per acre. the study of insects is vast, and scientists still have difficulty identifying many of them. But that doesn't stop you from being a citizen scientist.
